Lily Gladstone’s MCT Experience

Our international Missoula Children’s Theatre tour reaches 1,000+ communities every year, many of which have little to no access to the arts. Our work has recently been highlighted by former MCT kid and Golden Globe Winner, Lily Gladstone.

MCT is proud of Lily Gladstone, who participated in our touring Missoula Children’s Theatre programming in her hometown of East Glacier, Montana in the 1990s. Gladstone recently mentioned her experience with our tour in a New York Times article and on The Today Show.

Gladstone explains, “As a child growing up on the Blackfeet Reservation in northwestern Montana, there was one week that Gladstone looked forward to all year, when the Missoula Children’s Theatre would roll up in a little red truck, construct a set out of P.V.C. pipes and cloth backdrops, and cast local kids in a production that the whole community would come out to see at the end of the week.”

Lily described her childhood experience, saying she was “bullied a lot as a kid, partly because I was just goofy…but that one week a year is when I was cool.”

During her experiences with our touring children’s theatre, Lily had the same opportunity that thousands of other kids in underserved communities share: to learn and play, to explore their limits and build their confidence, and to forge connections with your community through the power of the performing arts.

Since Lily’s experience with The Missoula Children’s Theatre 30 years ago, our tour has expanded to an international program reaching over 1,000 towns every year – 75% of which are rural, with minimal access to the arts. MCT is proud of Lily, and truly honored to be part of how she discovered her belonging within the theatre community.

Locally in Missoula, 800+ children participate in our youth programming every year, as well as 200+ adult volunteer cast and crew members who make our vibrant community theatre possible. Between our touring performances and local productions through MCT, we estimate over 200,000 people experience theatre through our work – WOW!
